This is just as easily made in the campsite - but it travels well as well. Bring apples, nuts, celery, raisins or crannies and dressings. It makes a great side for anything from burgers to steak - but is great on it's own for lunch, too. Or add smoked chicken and a little cubed Monterey Jack cheese and you've got a main dish meal.

I make it with what I've got on hand - the constants are nuts, celery, dried fruit, apples, dressing. You can vary the tang a bit with the apples you use - I've used Granny Smiths, Jonagolds, but my favorites are Cosmic Crisp and Honeycrisp. The important thing is to use a really crisp, juicy apple. Any mushiness or mealiness and it is not a satisfactory dish. It makes all the difference. If you don't have crisp apples, don't waste the rest of the ingredients.

Nuts - use traditional walnuts, or pecans or almonds (for all, raw unsalted) And for dried fruit, raisins (Flame, Thompson, or even Golden, or a combo) or I'm kind of addicted to Craisins (dried cranberries, aka crannies.) For dressing, I mix equal parts of a good quality honey mustard and a poppyseed dressing. The combination of sweet and tangy is perfect.
